Reader’s Question:

I currently live in New York but I am planning to move in Miami Florida. Do I set up a car insurance policy ahead of time or should I buy the policy once I get there?

It would be best if you get your auto insurance in Florida before you arrive. The state of Florida requires you to register your car within ten days of becoming a resident in the state of Florida. You will also need to provide proof of car insurance in Florida as part of the registration process.

If you have already obtained your Florida car insurance before moving to in Miami, you no longer need to rush around searching for the most affordable car insurance once you arrive in Miami. The benefit of this is that it allows you to have your new car insurance policy in place before terminating your old insurance policy thus avoiding lapse in your car insurance.

To get car insurance you can ask your current car insurance provider in New York to check if they also sell car insurance in Florida so you can just transfer your policy to Florida insurance. It is also best to look around first for the most affordable rate in Florida to make sure you are getting the best deal. You can start getting quotes here.
